Friend of mine is 6'8" and needs a car. +/- 6 grand, no tranny preference, sedan (as opposed to wagon) OK, but must be reliable. Mazda 3 known for headroom as is the Honda Element. Any other ideas? No VWs please.

Suzuki SX4, Suzuki Aerio have tremendous headroom. Also the 1st gen Versa.

Headroom?
That's only half the battle!
If you are 6' 8" you probably have a long inseam and need legroom too. You don't want to drive with bent knees or knees resting against a console for too long.
Full size car or truck would be the way I'd go. Maybe a mid-size if the leg room is good enough.

BMW Z3.
I'm 6'3" and fit with room to spare. If it comes with a removable hardtop, then even better.

Panther car, Crown Vic, Marquis or Towncar, preference is his but they are incredibly reliable, spacious and you get a v8 and RWD, I average 19 mpg with a good mix of city/highway, which is way better than any truck in that price range. I'm 6'3" and I have plenty of room to spare for headroom, seat width and legroom.

6'9" here. I drive an Elantra, but would not recommend it. I would suggest the newer Subarus. All subarus without moon roofs seem to have tons of headroom in addition to plenty of legroom. Also, the Kia Soul has tons of headroom.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Probably for the same reason I refuse to buy another one... Mine is currently sitting in my backyard blown up.

Reliability - and more expensive to fix than Japanese/Korean cars in general.

I'm 6' 4" and I drive a Miata however I just fit, so I wouldn't recommend that lol. My last car was a Jeep Wrangler had plenty of room and it was super reliable and fun. I had a TJ with 5 speed with the 4 cylinder (great engine!). I definitely recommend a Jeep!

So, is Audi ok?
VW's aren't that unreliable, especially compared to BMWs.

Pretty much any truck or SUV should be an easy fit but if a car is a requirement a Mazda3 is indeed a good choice (best without the sunroof). I have one and at 6'5" don't even use the seat in the furthest back position. My brother at 6'8" does though so that bodes well enough for your friend.
